The Second letter to Timothy was written by Paul when he was in the prison in Rome. This is Paul’s last writing . He was facing death-martyrdom. He had to say much in a little time and Paul writes his most personal letter with more of his feelings and thoughts. Paul writes about the great apostasy which will blot out the “faith” just like Jesus said in Luke 18:8 ” “when the Son of Man cometh,shall He find faith in the earth?” With the central message”I know whom I have believed,and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” 1:12;

Chapter 1: Paul The Preacher: Paul’s son in the Gospel was Timothy. Paul prayed for him night and day. Paul long to see Timothy. He had full confidence in Timothy. He told him to stir up his gift. Timothy was ordained by Paul. V;7 is an important verse to remember “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power,and of love,and of sound mind.” Timothy is not to be ashamed of the message or messengers of Christ.. He reminds Timothy of his calling. Timothy is to hold on to sound doctrine. He is to remain true to ministry. Paul says about himself that He is an Apostle appointed by Jesus- God; He is a Preacher and He is a teacher. The final verses of this chapter that he had been forsaken by many of his friends and he had been helped by onesiphorus.

Chapter 2 : Paul The Example: In this chapter Paul uses seven figures of speech to describe the duty and the activity of a believer. 1: A Son – he should follow the example and teach others, so they may teach others. 2: A soldier: He is to endure hardships and avoid the entanglements of the world- to please the one who made him a soldier 3: An Athlete: He is to contend for the reward. He is to abide by the rules.

4. A farmer : Must labor before he partakes of the fruit. 5. A Student : II Timothy 2:15 ” Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 6: A Vessel : A Vessel must be clean to be usable. 7: A Servant : A believer is a servant, gentle,apt to teach,and Patient.

Chapter 3 : Paul The Prophet : Paul states in V:1 “This know also, that in the last days,perilous times shall come” This means the last days of the church also in I Timothy 4:1; II Peter 3:3; Jude 18; In V:2-13

Paul uses 22 Phrases to describe last days;

  1. Lovers of their own selves. 2. covetous- get what one wants. 3.boasters. 4.Proud. 5.blasphemers. 6. disobedient. 7. unthankful. 8. unholy . 9. without natural affection. 10. truce breakers- not keeping their promises.11. false accusers. 12. without self control. 13. fierce- brutal 14. dispisers of those that are good. 15.Traitors or betrayers. 16. heady- reckless 17. high – minded 18.Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. 19. denying the power of God. 20. not able to discern the truth. 21. seducers or sorcerers. 22. deceiving and being deceived.

Chapter 4 : Paul The Prisoner : Paul gives his Final Charge to Timothy he writes in V:1,2,5. At the calling out of the Church “at His appearing”, preach the word, Be diligent all the time. Reprove,rebuke and Exhort. watch thou in all things. Endure afflictions. do the work of an evangelist. Make full prove of the ministry. His Final Warning : V:3-4; In the last days men will not listen to doctrine. They will try to satisfy their own lusts. they will find their own false teachers.They will turn away from the truth– believe fables.

Paul gives his Final Testimony in V:6-8- : For I am now ready to be offered,and my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight. I have finished my course,I have kept the faith,henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord,the righteous judge,shall give me at that day,and not to me only but to all of them also that love His appearing.” This has been called the death-bed testimony of Paul. Paul spoke these words from the Prison in Rome. The crown of Reward is referenced in I Cor 9:25; Phil 4:1; I Thess 2 :19; James 1:12; and in Rev 3:11.

His last words v:9-22 Timothy was to try to go and see him, Demetrius an apostate. Only Luke was with Paul. He requested Mark to come to Rome. Tychicus was evidently a minister at Ephesus. He requested his coat to keep him warm in the damp Mamertine prison. Timothy was to bring Paul’s books and the Parchments- which were the Old Testament Scriptures. Alexander had persecuted him “At my first answer” – the first trial- “the Lord stood with me… that all Gentiles might hear” . Nest trial probably in Niros place -Paul stood alone- only the Lord stood with him and he preached the Gospel. The last few verses are personal greetings and Paul’s final Benediction. ” The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you . Amen.
