Week 9: 1 Samuel

Samuel was Israel s last Judge, He was also a priest and counts him as the first  prophet. Although  Moses was also a prophet. This book talks about how people rebelled and asked for a king  which God granted them though it was less than God`s best . “Lord of hosts” was used as God is the leader of the army also the word”prayer ” is used often

Chapter 1-8 : Samuel The last of the Judges. The first 3 chapters concentrates on the ark of the Lord. The silent years of Samuel was 20yrs. The people demanded a King and God  says “they have not rejected thee, they have rejected me ” Instead of His Direct will,God gives His permissive will.

Chapter 8-15 :  Saul The first of the Kings. So Saul was chosen to be a King and was anointed by Samuel. Samuel’s  anointing of Saul  held spiritual significance,by it the king was set apart for service  as God`s earthly representative on the throne of Israel.Chapter 10:6 The coming of the spirit of the Lord- equips Saul with doing the tasks. He wins his battle of Ammonites. Gibeah a city belonging to Benjaminites three miles north of Jerusalem was his hometown and was called  “Gibeah of Saul”. He won many battles. Later because he disobeyed  the instruction of God through Samuel the decline of Saul started.

Chapters 16-31 : David The anointed Successor:

Samuel was instructed to anoint David privately and  he didn’t rule until Saul `s death. Saul brought David as a Harp player to sooth his Evil spirit and Saul’s Eldest son Jonathan became best of friends. David and Goliath incident took place . When Saul was jealous of David and tried to kill him numerous times God protected him and also thru Jonathan. David marries Saul`s daughter Michal. later she becomes captive to Philistine.Eventually David retreats her. Jonathan and David make a covenant that they would treat each other as a family member with loyalty dignity and devotion. Jonathan continues to recognize David as Gods preeminence. and David remembers this when he is King and takes care of Jonathan s son. David goes through lots of battles for Saul and also spares Saul’s life two times. Eventually Saul acknowledges his error , but later continued to persecute David  and second time David saved his life and and acknowledges his sin, after  this time Samuel dies. David Goes to wilderness of Paran . There was an incident with Nabal and his wife Abigail delivers them and later Nabal dies and David marries Abigail, David lives among Philistines. There was a war against Philistines and Israel. Saul gets into witchcraft and awakens Samuel s spirit  since he didn’t get Gods instruction and eventually  Saul and his three children were in the war, all four dies in that war the same day .They took all four and   was offering to the Philistines God he was saved by the people of  Jabesh- Gilead. and there bones were buried there.

Week 8 The Book of Judges and Ruth

After Joshua`s death Judges were the chosen leaders  who were raised up by God who guided Israel through administration and military responsibility and spiritual needs. since the new generation did not know the Lord and disregarded the laws of Moses and they did whatever they wanted and displeased the Lord.  The sins are called apostasy. So in Judges we see the sinfulness and constant failure of man but we also see the constant mercy of God and God once again using the weak things  the strength of Gideon, The jaw bone used  by Sampson and Deborah a woman

I Corinthians 26-29 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His  presence.

Chapter 1 -2 : Here we see the explanation of how  the period came about.

Chapters 3-16  is about the  six  apostasies :children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord” and  “Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel”Because of the sin, they suffered  punishment through other kings ruling them, and had difficult time.  Then we see the mercy of our God thru supplication and delivery or salvation.

Chapters 17:21  confusion  in the religious, moral and political life of the nation.

        1. Delivered by Judge Othaniel  3:9-11, 3:5-8  when they sinned                      ruled by  The king of Mesopotamia – 8 yrs
        2.  Delivered by Judge Ehud 3:15-30 and Shamgar verse 31,                                   To King of Moab – 18yrs

        6. Delivered by Judge Samson 13-1 to 16-31  to Philistines 40yrs

The Book of Ruth

The book of Ruth is a love story in the times of Judges,it is unique in the fact that Ruth was the Grandmother of David placing her in the line of Christ out of the 4 women mentioned in the  line of Christ  Tamar, Rehab, and Bathsheba all three were unworthy  conduct but Ruth was virtuous and there are only two books that are mentioned by the names of women Ruth and Esther. In the last verse of the book it reveals her son Obed begat Jesse and he begat David who were all in the line of Christ.

Ruth was a Moabitess, Ruth Loved her Mother-in-law Naomi

Boaz is the picture of Christ our kinsman redeemer. The Godly Love

The next of kin or heir  law  is found in  Leviticus  25,Numbers 15, Deuteronomy 19 and 25 with 3 requirements, it is also called the law of Goel

He must be willing, must be relative and the right to redeem and must have the power..

Christ is our Kinsman and Redeemer He has the Power as  the son of God, The right as our true kinsman and the and he paid the price on the cross to redeem us.

Chapter 1 Love`s Choice a decision made

Chapter 2 Love`s response a service to people

Chapter 3 Love`s security  a rest to the people

Chapter 4 Love`s reward  the Jewish people get saved

Week 7 Book of Joshua

Joshua means”Jehovah is Salvation” The lesson and the center of message in Joshua is the New Testament Truth, as it says in 1 John 5:4 This is the victory that over cometh the world, even our faith.

Chapter 1-5  is about Entering the Land.

Chapter 6-12 is about overcoming the Land

Chapter 13-24  is about occupying the land

Joshua was a very faithful servant to God and to Moses, and was very obedient ,Victory of faith was rewarded  by leading into Canaan.Joshua and Caleb were the only two of the old generation were permitted into the new promised land.  he was Moses’s personal aide and commander and Moses lead them up to Canaan and Joshua was commanded to lead into the land of Canaan.  First 5 Books are the history of Moses written by Moses the journey from Egypt to up to the land of Canaan.  From Joshua to Esther  it is the history of Israel in the land of Canaan.  Numbers it says he was full of The Holy Spirit. He was the spiritual  disciple of Moses and also accompanied Moses up to the Mountain to receive Torah. He continued to be military commander in taking over Canaan and the administrator of allotting the land to the children of Israel and God was leading him every inch of the way.The Lords charge to Joshua is repeated from Deuteronomy 31:6,7,23.

The crossing of the Jordan river and   another miracle waters of Jordan divided, like the crossing of the Red Sea.carrying the Ark of the covenant- which symbolized the presence of God, people were commanded to be reverence and to follow it and be a distance away from it and to be clean. this is important because the other generation was in the same place 40 yrs ago. after they crossed they did a memorial in Gilgal remembering the power of God holding the waters still while they crossed, and the faithfulness of God to bringing them in and keeping the promise. Each memorial was made up of twelve stones.

chapter 2 mentions about the spy Joshua sent before he went o war to take over Jericho and stayed in a harlot named Rehab. so when they conquered Jericho she  and her whole family were saved.

Gilgal is where God rolled away the reproach of Egypt. the era of captivity  came to an end. This is also compared with Golgotha where mankind`s captivity of sin ended. The circumcision of the new generation was done to seal the covenant of God. , as per Abrahamic covenant to ready the people to lead into the possession of the land. Since they have to be faithful and completely dependent of God. They kept the Passover on the 14th day of the month. They ate old corn after the day after Passover and  there after the giving of the Manna ceased .and were blessed with the food of the land.

chapter 6, The division of the land. Chapter describes the kings defeated by Moses and the Joshua,  in chapter 13-19, The direction of the land in Chapter 20-24.

it also covers the 6  cities of refuge  3 on the west and 3 on the east that is when the children of Israel did something wrong unknowingly  they were protected there.  Just like in New Testament Christ is our refuge.

Also the command concerning the levitical cities.

The three things God gave Israel are all the land ,Rest after the journey and all the enemies into their hand. The principles are to obey him and to accomplish all that He asks,to the last details which pleases God and he rewards those who do His will.Similarly Jesus has given us a way to win Satan, and all we have to do is choose to acquire it out of our own will and Belief. Believe that Jesus is the son of God and He died on the cross to redeem us from our sins.and arose on the 3rd day victoriously  that we may find everlasting life.

Jesus is our Salvation.

The Book of Joshua covers the children of Israel from the shores of Jordan to conquest  and division of Canaan. It closes with the aged Joshua’s account of his farewell speech.

Week 6 Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy is last of the 5 books written by Moses, and one of the most quoted book in New testament,195 times. Deuteronomy was a book Jesus quoted many times. Deuteronomy describes the final preparations to go into Canaan and  the destinations through faithfulness of God. The law given before is given in detail as a second law  – and that is the meaning of Deuteronomy, for the new generation to reiterate since they grew up in the wilderness and to get them ready for the new experience in a new land, which is the promised land of milk and honey of Canaan.. It is a new revelation of God`s love.

Chapter 1-11  is the description of looking back

Chapter 12-34 is the description of going forward.

Chapter 6 1-25 (Read the whole chapter)          Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

This is the  center point that Christianity was built. Christ has brought us out of condemnation of sin- similar to bringing Israel out of bondage.

He has brought Israel out with spiritual Canaan like  Christ takes out into the spiritual everlasting life.

Mathew 36-40 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets

Although the children of Israel rebelled over and over and sinned against God, God kept his promise  and still does with all his promises and covenants. the center of the message is also Obedience to God  which is in many verses in Deuteronomy Chapter 4 and 5   4:1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.  John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Week 5 Numbers

This was named Numbers because the children of Israel was numbered twice , The old Hebrew name was “in the wilderness”.Numbers should be read in connection with Exodus,Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

Chapters 1-14  Talks about the Old generation

Chapters 15-20 The wandering years.

Chapters 21-36  Talks about the new generation

Numbers talks about the census, the numbering of the adult males, distribution of the tribes, numbering of the Levi tribes( priestly)also they were not included in the general census, they were kept apart for the service of God and to take care of the Tabernacle duties, and distribution of their duties. They are taught how to function as a camp.Their religious, civil  and military economies are set in order for their journeying, worshiping and conquering as a nation

chapters 5 thru 10  emphasizes of being Holy and truthful. The vows of the Nazarites  totally separated unto the Lord.Free will offering of each tribe, and consecration of the levites. The guidance of the Lord thru the pillar of cloud by day and Fire by night. The observing the Passover in remembrance of the Passover  similar to our Lord Supper -redemption from our sin thru Christ. The Lord commands Moses to make two trumpets for calling  the assembly.

When they were at Sinai getting ready for the journey the pillar of cloud lifts and the trumpet sounds and the whole camp moves toward their journey towards the promised land Canaan.

After three days they begin to murmur and complain and display their sinfulness of unbelief and they send 12 spies who give them negative reports to instigate rebellion and the people refused to enter the land except Joshua and Caleb  So the judgement falls and they wander for 38  more years and all of the old generation die by the end of the 40 years except Joshua and Caleb. God continues to support them thru all their needs .

During that time  the Aron priesthood  of 15000 people die of earthquake, fire and plague. Then causes the rod to blossom . the budding of the rod speaks of Christ and of His Resurrection, in Hebrew chapter 4 and 5..

Moses lived 120 years. 40 yrs in Egypt,40 yrs in  in Exodus Median. and last 40 years as a leader of children of Israel. He was the only man God buried. He was raised and glorified  and appeared in the mount of transfiguration.  Moses also does not see the new land because when they were complaining of water God asked Moses to speak tot he rock instead he smote it twice .The book of Deuteronomy  chapter 29 thru 34 explains the latter days of Moses.

Moses appointed Joshua as his successor and consecrated to take over Moses. Aaron also dies before reaching the land

Then again their journey was delayed due to Edom`s refusal to let them pass thru their land. later again people murmur and they get bitten by serpants and God gives them a way out to be saved.

People have confrontation with Balaam. Baalam summoned by Balak. Balak succeeds in turning people away from God

With the new generation they get new instruction of offering to be given unto the Lord,The vows of men and women,

Finally the book closes how to secure their inheritance which teaches of our security  in Christ

Week4: Leviticus

In Genesis we learnt the fall of man,In Exodus the redemption of God’s people and  centrality of tabernacle (the tent of meeting) for worship. In Leviticus 1:1 we read that”The Lord called unto Moses and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, in which God appears in a cloud over the tabernacle.  In center of the tabernacle was the Ark (exodus 40:16-28).

In Leviticus God gave the Law , Regulations concerning sacrifice, consecration of priests, clean and unclean differentiated, The day of atonement, ritual laws,  blessing and punishments, regulations concerning vows and offerings.

The crucifixion of Jesus  is pre-figured in 5 major sacrifices offered in the old testament. 1.Burnt offering– Christ offering Himself without Spot.,  2.  Meal offering– Balance, fragrance and purity , offering is the grains and fruits out of the soil as as a thanksgiving , it is a teaching that all our activities should be dedicated to God. It is God who sanctifies us as we give thanks and pray to him. 3. Peace offering– it was a ritual that reconciled Man to God through fellowship  the offering was offered to God and shared by the priests and worshiper.  4. Sin offering– This offering was required of all , according to the degree of guilt and responsibility, wealth or poverty of the offender. 5. Trespass or guilt offering-symbolizes satisfaction or restitution.

Leviticus 5:14-19 relates to the Holy things of the Lord. 6:1-7 ,about the property rights and including tithes and offerings.

Leaven in old testament represents sin,the oil as a symbol of Holy Spirit. that’s why in psalm 23 , we read He Anointeth my head with oil-which is a symbolic coming of the power of the Holy Spirit to guide, to aid and to empower us each day. The Salt of covenant is the act of sacrifice which is  a reminder of the of the eternal covenant relationship between the worshiper and God.

Chapter 26 Talks about Idolatry here it describes the vain objects of worship, including  the gods of this world literally idols, images or the riches of this world or temporal things. It simple means anything in one’s life that takes the place of God.  Leviticus also talks about Blessings and the importance of Obedience. Which are Blessings of material prosperity, victory over nations enemies, and the assurance of Gods presence among us, in all circumstances.

The  promise of punishment as a discipline in our lives and not of rejection but of correction because He loves us. When we keep His commandments and His laws, we learn the art of trusting and the practice of obedience.

Christmas can be summarized in 3 words “God with us” or “Gift of Grace” or” Gift of Love”

Isaiah Chapter 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.  We tend to put our attention on human birth of Christ rather than His Deity  who He really is “God with us..that is  what Emmanuel means.  It means that we are not isolated from a God who sits on a distant throne. He came to be with us in human form eating like us and wearing the clothes and so on,when Joseph and Mary called Him by his name literally living among us. The message of Christmas is that we are not alone but “God with us”

Luke Chapter 1:26,27 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin`s name was Mary. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary:for thou hast found favor with God. 31, And,behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son,and shalt call his name Jesus. 35.And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Gift of Grace Luke 1:50 And His mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation God Accepted Jesus`s perfect life as a fitting payment for all our sins. 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. for each person who turns and seeks God`s truth, a new journey begins. These are our first steps on a continuing journey. We know that life includes troubles.continue to have struggles, but when we walk with Him we are never alone or forgotten. God helps guides, and gives us grace for life. Each of us in a relationship with him becomes a new person imperfect but forgiven and given hope each day.

Gift of love: We have been given this gift 2000 years ago. John 3:16″ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  So our relationship can be restored Jesus was the only one who could meet his demand for a perfect sacrifice. Only He was sinless.( Hebrew 9:11-15).  He willingly gave himself on the cross. God accepted His sacrifice and raised him from the dead. This gift is truly free to everyoneand at all time.

The Savior has come bringing forgiveness and hope, and He is deserving of all the worship with Praise and Thanksgiving 1 Chronicle 16:8-15  Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvelous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.  He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations

May we continue to fix our eyes on Christ this season

Glory to God in the Highest

Week 2: Genesis

In the beginning… That is what Genesis means source  or birth the beginning of creation and ends with  death “in a coffin in egypt. we learn in the first 11 chapters about the

Abraham : Chapter 12 to 23 The faithful one Through obedience and sacrifice of Issac.God made 7 covenants to Abraham. I will make Thee great Nation, I will Bless Thee,I will make Thy name great,Thou shalt be a blessing, I will bless them that bless thee, I will curse them that curse thee, In thee that all the families of the earth be blessed.

Abraham’s  son Ismael was born to Sarah`s maid  because of her request Galatians: 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bond maid, the other by a free woman. 23. But he who was of the bonds woman was born after the flesh; but he of the free woman was by promise. Ismael`s descendants  are as far as I know are whom we call Islam. Genesis 16:11,12 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Week 3 Exodus

Exodus means going out .Exodus is the story of God  fulfilling his promise to Abraham.  Multiplying his descendants into a great nation Gen 12:2  from Jacobs family of 70 to 60,000 plus women and children who came out of Egypt., Redeeming them from bondage  the through blood of sacrifice and Power of God, out of slavery in Egypt to liberty in Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey.  Jacob and his family entered  Egypt to escape famine 430 years before the Exodus. Exodus 12:40 and Gal 3:17. When Jacobs family entered after they discovered that Joseph was the governor, he had risen on position and power leading Egypt to become a powerful and prosperous Nation. Then Joseph died in 1800 B.C.  A new King rose to power in Egypt began a policy of controlling and enslaving the people of Joseph. The deliverance of bondage is a seminal event in Israel`s History, the crossing of the red sea, becomes a visual sight of God’s Redemption.

Exodus was written by Moses Luke 24:44,  The first 18 chapters talks about Exodus. The power of God  bringing people out of bondage to new Freedom and Life. .Moses was born In about 1527 B.C. He spends 40 yrs in the royal palace and went into Exile.  Moses spends 40 yrs in Median, receives the Call and announcement of deliverance. Chapters 5-11. Nine plagues of Pharaoh  Deliverance by Blood and Power- here the institution of Passover with the 10th Plague 11:5 death of firstborn  which is thru blood The crossing of red sea which is God`s Power.

Chapter 19 through 24 talks about the Law.God then Gave them the law and instructions for building the Tabernacle.  Holiness of God,people were brought under law and  given Responsibility. The 10 commandments governing of moral life 20:1-7.  Judgement governing social life. chapter 21-23, ordinances governing religious life chapter 24. and The law was given to  provide a standard of righteousness Deuteronomy 4:2-8

The pattern was given to Moses during his 40 days in the mountain with God.It was designed to teach spiritual truth. Israel lapses into Idolatry and  building the tabernacle is delayed and finally built in one year.

week 1 Getting to know The Bible

In King James Bible:2nd Timothy chapter 3:16-17 It says:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2nd Peter 1:21 says:

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The word Testament means covenant or agreement. The old testament  is the covenant God  made with man before Christ came and  new Testament after Christ came. The Old Testament is the covenant of Law and the New Testament is covenant of Grace.
